Person-capacity labels are not dimension standards. Compare the exterior footprint, interior hot room, bench geometry, ceiling relationship and heater clearance envelope.

Capacity is not a dimensional standard

A “2 person,” “4 person” or “6 person” sauna label is a shopping category, not a building dimension. Manufacturers use different bench layouts, wall thicknesses, glass areas and shapes. The useful comparison is therefore the actual exterior footprint, interior hot-room dimensions, bench length/depth, ceiling height and heater clearance envelope.

Upper-bench height should be designed around the ceiling

Harvia's current bench-design guidance recommends approximately 1100–1200 mm between the upper bench and ceiling. The principle is important: leaving excessive empty volume above bathers puts the hottest air where nobody is sitting. A higher ceiling also increases room volume and can affect heater selection.

That does not mean every sauna should have the same finished ceiling height. Heater manuals can specify minimum room height, and product shapes such as barrels or sloped cabins create their own geometry. Use the exact heater requirement and then design the upper bench so the hot zone is usable.

Bench depth is a comfort measurement, not a capacity label

Harvia recommends at least 500 mm (roughly 19.7 inches) depth for an upper bench. Current manufacturer products vary. SaunaLife's CL4G, for example, publishes a 17.7-inch top-bench depth, while other models use deeper multi-tier arrangements.

For seated use, shoulder room and bench depth matter. For reclining use, clear bench length matters more. If one regular user wants to lie down, record that person's required clear length rather than upgrading from “2 person” to “4 person” and hoping the bench becomes long enough.

Exterior dimensions are for fit; interior dimensions are for heat

A sauna's wall thickness, glass frame, roof overhang or porch can make exterior dimensions significantly larger than the heated interior. Use exterior dimensions for room/site fit and delivery. Use interior heated dimensions for the Heater Size Calculator.

This distinction is especially important with outdoor kits and barrels. A canopy or porch can increase the footprint without increasing hot-room volume, while a thick insulated wall can reduce interior volume relative to the outside measurements.

Door dimensions and delivery dimensions solve different problems

SaunaLife currently publishes both assembled and shipping dimensions for several products. A 5-foot-wide finished room can arrive as panels in a much narrower crate, while a fully assembled outdoor cabin can require forklift or crane access. For an indoor panel sauna, compare the largest package/panel with stairs, turns and door openings before ordering.

For glass doors, record both the rough/opening requirement and the actual door size from the exact product. Do not infer one manufacturer door opening from another brand's 24- or 25-inch-wide glass door.

Dimension worksheet before choosing a model

  1. Maximum available exterior width, depth and height.
  2. Required access/service clearance around the sauna.
  3. Largest shipping package or preassembled section that must reach the site.
  4. Finished interior heated dimensions.
  5. Upper and lower bench length, depth and height.
  6. Desired seated and reclining use.
  7. Heater location plus exact minimum clearances.
  8. Door swing/opening and path of travel.
