Heater plus active climate system
Saunum Sauna Heater: Compare the Heater, Air System & Controls
Saunum combines traditional sauna heating with active air-blending technology, so the climate device and control system belong in the compatibility decision.
Saunum combines heating with active air blending
Saunum's heater ecosystem is materially different from a conventional heater-only comparison. Its product families integrate or pair the heater with a powered climate device that draws hotter air from higher in the sauna, mixes it with cooler lower air and redistributes the blend. That means the fan/climate architecture, controls and room layout belong in the product decision along with heater output and stones.
SaunaSelector treats this as a documented equipment architecture—not as a health claim. The technical questions are whether the room falls inside the model's sizing method, whether the control system matches, and whether the installation can accommodate the climate device.
Current Saunum heater families
| Family | Current positioning | Output / package pattern | Selection focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Experience | Home / smaller sauna applications | Current configurator shows 3.6, 4.5, 6 and 9 kW choices | Room sizing, stone basket and control system |
| Spa Session | Home sauna with integrated climate device | Current page shows 6 and 9 kW choices | Room range, control, installation position |
| Luxury | Larger home or public sauna | High-capacity heater/climate configuration | Large-room sizing and installation flexibility |
| Pro Experience | More intensive / public use | Current choices include 9, 12 and 15 kW | Control load, additional contactor box and large stone load |
The air-blending system changes the room-design conversation
Saunum describes its system as collecting hotter steam/air near the ceiling and mixing it with cooler lower air before returning the blend to the room. That does not remove the need for normal sauna ventilation or correct heater sizing. It adds another powered component whose intake/outlet placement, fan operation and controls must work with the benches and room.
For a custom room, coordinate the Saunum installation with the room drawings early rather than leaving the climate-device position until after benches and wall finishes are fixed.
Control choice is part of the package
Current Saunum product pages offer the Leil control system with the heater configuration; Saunum describes Leil as including a control unit, temperature and door sensors, touchscreen display, mobile connectivity and an internal air-circulation control button. North American Saunum documentation also includes AirIQ control products.
Do not combine controller names from different regional pages or model generations without checking the exact current installation manual. Use the Sauna Controller guide for the compatibility workflow.
Higher-output Pro models can add switching hardware
Saunum's current Pro Experience page notes that the control system's direct load capacity has limits and offers an additional contactor box where required by the heater output. This is exactly the kind of hidden component that makes a bare kW comparison incomplete.
Before purchase, record the heater model, output, regional control system, additional switching hardware, stone quantity and the manufacturer's room calculation.
Stones remain model-specific
Current Experience and Spa Session configurations list polished sauna stones in the 5–10 cm range, with quantities tied to the heater package. Pro Experience uses a larger stone load. Saunum also sells separate polished and unpolished stone sets for different heater applications.
Use Sauna Stones rather than assuming a Saunum stone set is interchangeable with another heater brand.
Who should put Saunum on the shortlist?
Saunum is most relevant when the buyer specifically wants an actively mixed sauna-air system rather than a conventional heater-only architecture. That feature is not automatically “better” for every room; it adds installation, control and service considerations. Compare it with Harvia or HUUM only after all candidates meet the room-sizing requirement.

Plan the climate-device position with the benches
Because Saunum actively moves air through the room, the physical position of the air-intake and outlet system deserves the same attention as heater clearances. Bench backs, guard rails and custom wall details should not be finalized without checking the exact installation drawing for the selected Saunum family.
For a retrofit, measure the existing room and document the current heater location before assuming an Experience or Spa Session system can occupy the same footprint. The useful comparison is the complete installed envelope: heater, climate device, controls, stones and required service access.

Frequently asked questions
What makes a Saunum heater different?
Saunum integrates or pairs sauna heating with a powered air-blending/climate system designed to mix hotter ceiling air with cooler lower air. That makes the climate device and control system part of the selection.
What are the current Saunum heater families?
Saunum currently lists home-oriented Experience and Spa Session families, larger Luxury models and Pro Experience products for more intensive or public use. Exact outputs and package contents vary.
Does Saunum use a separate controller?
Current Saunum heater pages offer Saunum control systems such as Leil, while North American documentation also includes AirIQ control products. The exact heater and regional documentation determine compatibility.
Can I size a Saunum heater with a generic kW rule?
No. Use Saunum's own heater calculator and model documentation, including its questions about log walls, glass doors and uninsulated wall area.
